BALA CYNWYD, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A bad crash involving a car and a SEPTA bus on City Avenue late Monday night sent one driver to the hospital.

Just before midnight, police say a red Kia hit a Route 38 SEPTA bus from behind on City Avenue southbound by Monument Road. The impact left the car mangled and the driver trapped in the twisted metal.

Rescue crews had to slice open the roof and peel it back to rescue the driver.

A SEPTA spokesperson said that driver, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. She said the bus driver did not want to get treatment on the scene but SEPTA medical personnel later examined the bus driver for minor injuries.

There was an unspecified number of passengers on board but none were hurt.

As Lower Merion police investigated the crash scene, the southbound lanes of City Avenue were closed between Presidential Boulevard and Monument Road for about four to five hours. The smashed car and damaged bus were towed away shortly before 5 a.m., and the road was fully open again soon after crews cleaned up the remaining debris.
