PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Charges have been refiled against a former Philadelphia police commander accused of striking protesters last summer.
Former Staff Inspector Joseph Bologna faces aggravated and simple assault and reckless endangerment from the incident on June 1, 2020, near 24th Street and the Parkway.
Video from the scene shows Bologna using a baton to strike people who were protesting in the wake of the death of George Floyd.
A judge dismissed the charges during a preliminary hearing last month.
The police union calls the charges baseless, noting it was not an unexpected move by District Attorney Larry Krasner.
Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 President John McNesby said in a statement: “Krasner is clearly running away from his failed record over the past three years and this latest decision to re-charge this officer is not based on facts or evidence.”
