CHESTER, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Wells Fargo is closing its only branch in the city of Chester, in Delaware County. Later this spring, the city will be left with just one bank.
David Guzik, a loyal Wells Fargo customer since 2016, said he’s devastated about the closure: “It’s the worst news ever. The worst.”
He said he frequents the branch on Avenue of the States in Chester’s business district several times a week.
“This is one that’s always in a good location,” he said.
A teller at the branch says their last day in operation is June 21.
When Wells Fargo closes, the city of 32,000 residents will be left with a single bank, the TD Bank branch on Providence Avenue.
“We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause, and customers can continue to bank with us at our other nearby locations,” Wells Fargo said, in a statement to KYW Newsradio.
Over the last two years, Lanestrea Davis has been a frequent and loyal customer.
“It’s not much in Chester as it is, so the little bit we do have, we appreciate it and utilize it quite a bit, so to worry about getting to other places and traveling further will be a hassle,” she said.
Davis says she’s thinking about the people who will now need to travel a few miles outside of the city to find a Wells Fargo branch, including associates she recommended to do business with Wells Fargo. The closest branch to the city is in Brookhaven, about two miles away.
“A few people I got to get an account with Wells Fargo because I thought they were such a good bank. I got a few business partners of mine to open accounts.”
It’s not ideal for customers, like Guzik, who do not have a vehicle.
“I’ll walk miles to go to another Wells Fargo,” Guzik said.
Wells Fargo closed two Philadelphia branches and one in Montgomery County last year. The bank recently announced three more Philadelphia locations will soon close.
