PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Residents in one Chinatown apartment building are displaced New Year’s Day after a fire ripped through the upper floors of their building.

Authorities are investigating what sparked a fire in an apartment building on Ninth and Spring streets in the Chinatown section of Philadelphia on New Year's Day.

Fire chief Ryan Johnson said it happened just before 2 p.m.

“We pulled up and it was heavy smoke coming from the fourth floor. We placed all hands in service,” Johnson said.

Johnson said crews were able to place the fire under control and the damage was primarily limited to the top floors, where the fire most likely began.

“Nobody was hurt, no injuries and the apartment was not occupied at the time,” he added.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
