NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — Chris Christie cast doubt on the Manhattan district attorney's investigation that could make Donald Trump the first former president in U.S. history to be indicted.
On Tuesday, Christie, the former New Jersey governor and one-time federal prosecutor, questioned whether the details of a “hush money” payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election are “worthy” of the Manhattan district attorney’s time.
“I think most people in the country who thought about it think he had an affair with Stormy Daniels and he paid her off to keep her quiet. OK? And I don’t know that they think that’s the crime of the century,” Christie told NJ.com after a talk on bail reform in Newark.
“And whether it’s worthy of indicting a former president of the United States in a jurisdiction where crime is running rampant,” he continued.

Christie noted that he doesn’t know what evidence the Manhattan DA may have. “I won’t know all the evidence until they issue an indictment, if that’s what happens.”
Christie served as an adviser to Trump but ultimately distanced himself from him after the riot at the U.S. Capitol in January 2021.
Christie made the comments at the Christie Institute of Public Policy at the Seton Hall University School of Law.
The grand jury in the Manhattan DA investigation resumed work Wednesday. While there are signs that they’re close to wrapping up, it’s unclear when an indictment vote may be held.
