WOODBURY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A South Jersey man was sentenced Friday to 65 years in prison for shooting and killing his stepfather during an argument in 2021.
Christian Smith, 28, of Woolwich, New Jersey, was found guilty of first-degree murder and a second-degree weapons charge in January.
Prosecutors said he shot and killed his stepfather, Dennis McKenzie Jr., at their home on Oct. 9, 2021.
Court documents revealed that the two were arguing about comments Smith made about the sexuality of McKenzie’s daughter and her friend. McKenzie is said to have tried to hit Smith, and the latter then pulled a handgun from his waistband, held it over his mother, who was trying to diffuse the situation, and shot him four times.
Prosecutors said Smith then took apart the gun and recorded himself saying, "That's what he gets."
Smith must serve 85% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
