Got an idea about how to revitalize East Market Street? The city wants to hear it

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An unusual new storefront has popped up on East Market Street. It’s not selling anything. It wants your ideas.

City officials cut the ribbon on My Market East, a retail space that’s been converted into a kind of gallery with models, photos and graphics, but they’re not for sale. Mayor Cherelle Parker said they’re to stimulate ideas for how to revive East Market Street, which is home to more than 300,000 jobs, according to Center City District President Prema Gupta.

Parker said she doesn’t want a new vision. She wants to restore the old vibrancy. It’s an effort decades in the making.

She concedes there are already dozens of revival plans gathering dust, but she pledges the current effort will spur action. She thinks residents can help by stopping in and sharing their thoughts about a comeback for the street. It will be open Wednesday through Saturday until July 31.

“Everyone is invited to walk through these doors, explore the vision for Market East, share ideas and help shape the decisions that will guide its future,” Parker said.
