Ahead of lengthy I-95 construction project in Wilmington, expect closures for set up

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — On March 1, the Restore the Corridor project is scheduled to begin along I-95. That project is expected to take three years to complete, so get ready for changing traffic patterns during that time.

But starting this weekend, DelDOT's C.R. McLeod said the pre-construction work gets underway.

"To set up the new contraflow lane pattern ahead of construction beginning,” he explained. “So before we can actually begin construction, we have to shift the traffic, put down new striping, install the safety barriers, and just ensure traffic will just be able to flow as best as possible as we set up this construction zone."

Because of this, parts of I-95 in Wilmington will be completely closed at times for the rest of February.

"There will be some overnight closures of I-95,” said McLeod. “We'll be having detour signage present. Those closures will be happening in the 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. hours when there's the least amount of traffic possible to try to get this work done."

This weekend’s closures will be during those times both Saturday and Sunday night in the southbound lanes between Exit 6 and the I-95/I-495 merge. Several lanes will be blocked off starting at 9 p.m. Friday through the day Saturday.

"We can get this work done over the next couple of weekends and still be on target to begin construction in March,” added McLeod.

Bad weather can change these plans — it already has. The pre-construction work was actually supposed to start last weekend but had to be pushed back because of snow.

"The winter weather is obviously going to play a role in that setup work and trying to get the striping down,” said McLeod.
