PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The College of Physicians of Philadelphia has named its first female president in its 234-year history.

Dr. Mira Irons will be the college’s sixth president and CEO.

She is a board-certified physician in clinical and biochemical genetics and pediatrics. Her 30 years of experience span academic medicine, clinical practice, medical professional leadership and scientific research.

Her career in academic medicine notably includes Tufts Medical Center, Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

Irons also served in senior positions at the American Board of Medical Specialties and the American Medical Association positions, which she said helped prepare her for her latest role.

“The [College of Physicians] is really a unique organization because of the role it plays as a trusted source,” she said. “The history that has defined the profession and guided us, educating the community, convening important discussion and also serving as a catalyst for young people to ultimately pursue medicine as a career.”

The coronavirus pandemic has been a teachable moment, Irons noted, and one she will use when it comes to helping mold young physicians. She hopes this position can also serve as a light to others.

“People need role models and they need to see themselves,” she said. “[It’s] so important that young girls to know that a woman like myself, a female physician, can lead an organization like this.”

Irons was selected after an eight-month-long search. She will officially join the college on Aug. 24, succeeding Dr. George M. Wohlreich after 16 years.
