PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The 2024 general election is over. The people have spoken. So, what have we learned? And what's next for both parties?

Election Day left Americans either elated or emotionally drained and, in some cases, traumatized and depressed. Whatever your feelings about the outcome of the election, remember: This is a democracy. Sometimes your candidate will win, and sometimes your candidate will lose. Above all, it is important to stay involved.

In the end the border was less important than your order at the local grocery store. Abortion and women's health were huge issues — big enough in Pennsylvania, and in abortion-limited states, but not as much in the three nearby states where it is legal.

In Pennsylvania, Kamala Harris was a good candidate, though some members of her team didn’t bond well with local politicos. The takeaway here: In a national campaign, local knowledge is invaluable.

The Harris campaign team, not the candidate, failed to connect with both city Democratic chief Bob Brady and his ward leaders.

But in Bucks County, the always frenetic Trump team embraced the input of Republican chair Pat Poprik. Her advice  gave Trump a tie with Harris in the deep purple county.

There is a win for Trump, shattering the suburban blue wall of the Democrats. Montco, Delco, Chester came out big, but Bucks really hurt the Harris campaign.

Remember — it's still a 50/50 country. And both parties can benefit from a bit of perspective.

Democrats should try to keep up pressure on Trump. And as the Democratic Party searches for anwsers, they should really start searching for new ideas to enhance the daily lives of Americans if there is to be any life in future campaigns.

For President-elect Trump, Tuesday delivered a big win — but there are daunting challenges for him. Remember that he must now answer not only to MAGAmania but also to the independent, Latino and Black voters whose small but powerful punch helped him take the swing states. He will have great power, but he will need to use it carefully to put in motion the change his supporters say they are seeking.
