PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A woman is in critical condition after she was struck by a concrete slab in Center City Wednesday.

Shortly before 9:30 a.m. at the corner of 13th and Walnut streets, police said a 30-year-old woman was hit by a falling piece of concrete. Contractors were working on a building above.

Police said she was hit on the head.

She was taken to Jefferson University Hospital in critical condition.

The building, located at 201 S. 13th St., received two violations from the Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspections in November, according to Shemeka Moore, L&I communications director.

On Nov. 3, 2022, a small section of the facade fell off, similar to Wednesday's incident.

On Nov. 30, the property received another violation because it failed to report the fallen facade to L&I, which is required by the city.

The site where the woman was injured is located in the heart of the Gayborhood, bustling with busy restaurants and pedestrians.

One woman, who asked that her name not be used, lives in the neighborhood and walks by the area every day.

"This is an old city," she said. "People need jobs, so how about hiring some people that can go and shore up some of these buildings so that something like this doesn't happen?"

The incident remains under investigation.
