PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A construction worker was rescued from a trench that collapsed at a job site Friday morning in North Philadelphia.
Rescuers responded to Thompson and American streets in Northern Liberties around 7 a.m. to find a man trapped. He was pinned up to his knee with dirt that collapsed in from the side wall of the trench.
It took crews a half-hour to get him out, according to Battalion Chief Derek Bowmer.
“We have the best of the best here. We have our collapse unit from Rescue 1. Fortunately enough, they’re about 2 minutes away on Girard Avenue,” he said. “There were people from the construction site digging him out too.”
The worker is now in stable condition at the hospital.
The trench is about 6 feet deep. The incident happened at an apartment complex that is under construction.
The Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspections is investigating.
