PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- A 19-year-old woman was killed in an attempted carjacking this morning. Police say the suspect was killed by responding officers.

Police say it started around 4 a.m., when a man entered St. Luke’s Church in Germantown and shot at a woman inside before stealing her car keys.

“What we have today, what we have this morning, is the case of a deranged man on a rampage," Sgt. Eric Gripp said.

Gripp said, when police responded, they found the woman with a gunshot wound inside of her car on Maplewood Avenue near Wayne Avenue.

Police then saw man with a rifle at Greene Street and Chelten Avenue.

“He did not drop the weapon. The officers discharged at him several times, but they do not believe they struck him, and he fled on foot," Gripp said.

Gripp says the man ran into another group of cops, shot at them, and eventually got into their car when they retreated. However, the keys weren’t inside.

The suspected gunman had one last run in with police on Germantown Avenue.

“Mid block, right there, the officers again ordered him to drop his weapon. He did not. The officers fired, struck him several times, at which point he dropped his weapon," Gripp said.

Both he and the woman were pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.
