COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations on the rise in Pennsylvania

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — COVID-19 case counts keep climbing in Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania as a whole is averaging 22 new cases per 100,000 people over the past seven days. That's on par with early May as cases started dropping quickly after the spring peak of 40. It also compares with early November as cases were climbing before the winter spike peaked at 83.

The seven-day average of COVID-19 deaths across Pennsylvania is 12, the highest it had been since early June. But it's held steady and even dipped a bit over the past seven days.

Back in early November, when cases counts were similar, the seven-day average of deaths was about three times higher, but the number of hospitalizations is about the same. Hopsitalizations are on the rise, up about 400 over the past week, and about 700 over the past 14 days.

Montgomery County has some of the highest vaccination numbers in Pennsylvania, with 58.5% of residents fully vaccinated, according to the state Department of Health. Their seven-day average of new cases was in the single digits at the end of June. In early July, it's up to 170, or 21 per 100,000.

There were no reported COVID-related deaths in Montgomery County this past week. Overall this month, the county reported nine, compared to four in July and 10 in June. Those numbers are down significantly from the end of last year and the beginning of this year before vaccines were widely available, when there were more deaths each day then there were last month.

According to the CDC, Pennylvania ranks fifth among all states for the total number of vaccine doses administered, with 65.3% of everyone 18 and older vaccinated.
