PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The funerals for the victims of the Fairmount rowhouse fire will take place Monday at Temple University's Liacouras Center in North Philadelphia. 12 people were killed, including nine children, earlier this month.
Meanwhile, the community continues to make donations to help the victims' families. Among the recent contributors is a dance company in South Philly.
The Chocolate Ballerina Company offered free classes on Sunday to people who donated coats, hats, gloves, socks and other winter items, as well as canned food, for those in need following the fire.
The effort, called "The Gift of Warmth," was organized by Chanel Holland, the company's artistic director. Holland is also a dance teacher at Bache-Martin Elementary School, where some of her students escaped the fire.
"As a teacher at Bache-Martin Elementary ... hearing that some of the students that are in my dance class were actually involved in Fire was very heartbreaking for me," she shared.
"These type of events no longer just affect those involved, they affect the entire community. They've affected me, they've affected my students they inspire them to give more, to give gift of warmth to the rest of the community."
7-year-old Isa Simonvil donated a couple hats and matching gloves, saying, "It makes me feel happy and I guess thankful too, that I even have a chance do it."
