PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — One person was killed and another was injured in a double shooting at a gas station in Fairmount Tuesday night.
It happened at the Sunoco station located at the intersection of College Avenue and Poplar Street just after 7 p.m.
Surveillance video shows a man walking into the store, but an armed private security guard quickly stops him. The guard placed his hand on the man’s chest.
“There was some sort of altercation between this 39-year-old, who was armed with a gun, and the armed security guard,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small. “We know shots were exchanged. We don’t know who fired shots first.”
Both men were taken to the hospital. The security guard, who is licensed to carry, was shot in the leg and is listed in stable condition. The 39-year-old man was shot in the face and leg. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the hospital.
According to preliminary information, the man lives in the area and is known to visit that store.
“The 39-year-old male, who was carrying a gun and was shot and killed, does live in the area. We know he frequents this location, but we don’t know why he entered this Sunoco mini-mart armed with a gun and confronted an armed security guard,” Small said.
The man may have been inside the store earlier, then returned with a gun. Small said police are actively investigating.
