DELAWARE COUNTY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Voters of all political persuasions may be wondering what to do with their campaign lawn signs and banners, now that the 2024 election cycle is over. Wonder no more, say county officials — they have a plan in place to get rid of them.
Delaware County is offering a campaign sign recycling program. For two days this weekend, they'll collect them from voters, free of charge.
"This event allows members of the community, party leaders — really, anybody to come out with their campaign signs for a meaningful way to recycle," said Rebecca Yurkovich, Delco's interim chief sustainability officer.
"The same way that people plan their route to get out and vote — we want to see them do the same thing each year for this event as well."
It takes place on Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Rose Tree County Park, near Media.
Yurkovich says this is their first post-presidential election recycling event.
"And it really was prompted by the recognition that, after one day, these signs go from [having] a purpose to [becoming] litter in our community," she said.
"They are all historically going to incineration, and that's not something that made a whole lot of sense to us."
All members of the community can drop their materials off to be collected for recycling, she says — just bring in your own signs.
"We never recommend that folks remove signs that they did not place. However, I know there's a lot of different rules, depending on different communities."
Yurkovich says there is no limit to the number of signs someone can drop off, whether it's one or a whole van full of them.
