PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Health officials have detected the first human case of West Nile virus in Delaware County this year.

According to the Delaware County Health Department, mosquito bites and West Nile virus are commonly associated with warmer months; however, mosquitoes are still active into the fall, so people should take precautions.

Human cases of the virus are not uncommon, the health department noted, and most people do not develop any symptoms. The county reported two human cases of West Nile virus in 2022.

The virus was detected in multiple pools of mosquitoes over the summer. The Delaware County Health Department sprayed adulticide at least four different times.

The health department said it is continuing to take mosquito mitigation measures. Residents can do their part by draining anything that can hold water, as it attracts mosquitoes; wearing long-sleeve shirts and pants; and putting on insect repellent.
