MEDIA, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Officials in Delaware County are committing to a greener future, and their first step toward that goal is the new sustainability plan they’ve released.
Delaware County Council vice chair Elaine Schaefer says their five-year sustainability plan, which is the result of about two and a half years worth of work, is a top priority for this council, “to really embrace … our own responsibility as a county in addressing our carbon footprint.”
Schaefer says the plan contains more than 300 action items, which she calls achievable and measurable. They range from simple objectives, like switching to LED lightbulbs, to broader goals, such as eliminating waste, improving watershed quality and converting their fleet to electric vehicles.
“When we do all of our construction, making sure that it is [with] sustainably-oriented materials and processes,” she said, adding they’ve already started on some of their practices.
As for the bottom line,” Schaefer says they’ve factored in cost. “There are some short-term costs up front, mainly in terms of staffing and education,” she said. “In the long run, it’s an economic driver and it will support our economy.”
The entire 124-page plan can be found on the county website.
