PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Delaware has recorded its first case of measles in more than a decade.
The Delaware Division of Public Health said an unvaccinated man from Kent County tested positive for the virus.
Health officials are doing extensive contact tracing to find anyone who has been exposed.
This comes amid a nationwide outbreak that includes more than 100 cases in Pennsylvania — most of them in unvaccinated people in Lancaster County.
Measles is highly contagious. Symptoms prior to a rash include a cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. The virus can cause pneumonia, brain inflammation and even death.
The measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine is 97% effective at preventing measles.
