PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Democrat Chris Coons will face Republican Michael Katz in the Senate race in Delaware this November.
Seeking his fourth term in the Senate, Coons ran away with Tuesday night’s primary election. He handily beat Jeff Appelhans, Mary Louve and Eric Hansen — who appeared on the ballot as “E. No-Trump Hansen” — to earn the nomination.
Katz, a former Delaware state senator, bested John Shulli in the Republican primary.
Sarah McBride was uncontested in the Democratic primary for Delaware’s lone House seat. Challenging her will be Republican Joseph Arminio, a political science scholar. Arminio bested John J. Whalen and Earl L. Cooper in the primary.
Meanwhile, incumbent Democrat Kathy Jennings beat out two challengers in the primary race for Delaware attorney general. She will vie for a third term against unopposed Republican nominee David Graham.
The primaries set the stage for the November general election, when Republicans will try to break a Democratic lock on Delaware’s statewide offices against the backdrop of a midterm election cycle that tends to punish the president’s party.
Delaware’s was the last state primary scheduled before November.
