PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Delaware is working to meet President Joe Biden's request that everyone be eligible to get a vaccination appointment by May 1.
One-fifth of all Delawareans have now gotten at least one COVID-19 shot, and state health officials want that number to keep going up.
Gov. John Carney says, in his state, that starts with getting rid of the phases.
"Instead of our 1a, 1b, 1c approach, we will move into an aged-based allocation: 50 years and older can register at the state of Delaware for the COVID-19 vaccination," Carney said.
Division of Public Health Director Dr. Karyl Rattay says pharmacies will be allowed to vaccinate anyone in the state who is age 50 and older.
"Spots may be very limited, as the demand is going to be really high over the next coming weeks, so please be patient," she said. "Pharmacies are really beginning to expand their capacity so we're grateful for that."
Anybody age 50 and older can sign up for the state's wait list, as well, starting next Tuesday.
Health care providers can also start vaccinating Delawareans 16 and older, with high and moderate risk medical conditions, starting Wednesday. Hospitals are included in this.
