18-year-old charged after Swarthmore professor on bicycle fatally struck by car

Eduard “Teddy” Einstein was struck and killed on Dec. 3, 2025, while riding his bicycle along West Providence Road in Upper Darby Township.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An 18-year-old is facing charges after authorities said he crashed his car into a Swarthmore College professor on a bicycle in Upper Darby last winter, killing him.

The Delaware County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday announced charges against 18-year-old Kali Poole, of Collingdale.

On Dec. 3, 2025, officials said Poole was driving with only a learner’s permit when he hit 39-year-old Eduard “Teddy” Einstein on his bike near West Providence Road and East Penn Pines Boulevard. Police said Einstein was in a marked bike lane, and Poole failed to yield while making a left turn.

Poole was in the car alone, investigators said, and had marijuana in his system at the time of the crash.

Einstein was a mathematics professor at Swarthmore and a father of two young children. According to PennDOT records, Einstein was one of 28 bicyclists killed on Pennsylvania roads last year, and the only one in Delaware County.

Poole is charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, accidents involving death or injury while not licensed, DUI, and related driving offenses.

“[Einstein] acted lawfully and responsibly, while [Poole] made the deliberate choice to drive while high and without a license,” Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse said in a statement. “These decisions had irreversible consequences that I hope our entire community will take note of.”

Jacob Russell, a friend of Einstein’s and an organizer with Philly Bike Action, said the charges against Poole “highlight the need for more investment in infrastructure that physically protects all road users so that when someone makes the deadly decision to drive impaired, families like the Einsteins’ don’t pay the price.

“PennDOT and Delaware County need to take bold action to transform Providence Road into a genuinely safe place to ride a bike.”

A GoFundMe for Einstein’s family has raised more than $86,000.

Police issued an arrest warrant for him on Monday. Anyone who knows his whereabouts is asked to contact Upper Darby police at 610-734-7686.
