PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Delaware County lawyer is accused of writing more than $400,000 in fake checks to avoid paying taxes and buy himself an electric truck.

Daniel Pallen, 46, of Springfield, has pleaded guilty to tax evasion and mail fraud.

Federal prosecutors said Pallen submitted 14 fraudulent “certified” checks to the IRS to pay his taxes over a number of years, stretching as far back as 2013. The checks, which had a false bank account number, totaled nearly $300,000.

Authorities said Pallen also used a fake cashier’s check of nearly $130,000 to buy a new electric utility truck. His scheme began to unravel when the check for the truck bounced.

Pallen is scheduled to be sentenced in December and faces a maximum of 25 years in prison.
