PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — When you think of teeth, you probably think about a smile, but your teeth and gums play a far more significant role than contributing to your overall appearance.

According to the Mayo Clinic, oral health has a direct connection to cardiovascular health. Poor dental health and the resulting inflammation have been linked to heart attack, stroke and endocarditis.

The impact does not stop there. Germs in the mouth can lead to pneumonia and gum disease. It can also lead to premature birth and low-birth-weight babies in expectant mothers.

Take the time to make certain you take care of your teeth and gums and see your dentist regularly.
