Dine Latino Restaurant Week kicks off 5th season

Special event features Cristina Martinez of South Philly Barbacoa

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Dine Latino Restaurant Week kicks off Monday, celebrating Latino entrepreneurship across the greater Philadelphia region.

Twice a year, participating Latino restaurants offer select deals or prix fixe menus. This September restaurant week coincides with another significant time.

“It is Hispanic Heritage Month, and in the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber [of Commerce], we thought that the importance of the restaurant industry in the Latino community should be celebrated,” explained Jennifer Rodriguez, chamber president and CEO.

Dine Latino Restaurant Week started during the pandemic to help struggling business owners, but it has also become a way to educate diners about Hispanic culture.

“Food and culture are ways in which we maintain ourselves,” she said, “connected to our homelands, to our history, to our heritage.”

The event runs Monday through Friday. The nearly two dozen participating restaurants are offering a free dessert or appetizer with the purchase of two entrees.

On Friday, there will also be a cooking demonstration at Reading Terminal Market with James Beard Award-winning chef and activist Cristina Martinez of South Philly Barbacoa.

“This is the grand finale of Restaurant Week,” said Rodriguez. “This is a new feature that we have added, and we think that Christina Martinez is an outstanding representation of a Latino entrepreneur in the food industry.”
