CHESTER, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A dog that was shot during a horrific crime in Delaware County last week is making a remarkable recovery.

On April 1 in Chester, police said a man shot and killed another man, stabbed a woman to death, and sent another woman to the hospital. Police ultimately shot and killed the suspect.

During his rampage, Diamond, a 4-year-old mixed-breed dog, was shot in the face. It’s not known whether she was caught in the crossfire or if she was intentionally shot.

“Diamond is a fighter and a survivor,” said Sara Smith with the Brandywine Valley SPCA, which rescued the dog and took her in for emergency surgery.

“Somehow, miraculously, this girl missed any catastrophic injuries that would have been fatal,” said Smith.

While now in good spirits, Diamond is not in the clear just yet.

“It did cause damage to one of her eyes, so the eye is going to need to be removed, and then there are still fragments in parts of her head and her neck,” Smith said.

In between surgeries, Diamond has been able to get some much-needed R&R.

“We are grateful that we were able to get her to a specialized foster home that can care for her and have her be in a home environment where she’s getting dotted on, getting those table scraps, whatever she wants to feel comfortable and cared for.”
