PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Seven dogs and a cat were rescued from a hot SUV parked at the edge of Temple University's campus last week. All animals survived, but three of them are still searching for a “furever” home.
A passerby noticed the animals were trapped in crates inside the back of an SUV at 13th and Jefferson streets on July 25 — a day when the temperature hit 98 degrees — and notified Temple University officers.
“The owner was there and agreed to surrender to them, realizing that he was not in a position to care for them at that point. So they brought the dogs to us,” said Sarah Barnett, executive director of ACCT Philly.
The owner told police he was living in the vehicle with his pets.
“It is sad, because people will often say, I'd rather live in my car than give up my animals. You know, you can love your animals and be willing to live out of your car with your animals, but you can't control the temperature,” Barnett said.
Two dogs were adopted, three are in rescue facilities, but dogs Sky and Winter, and Sunny the cat, are still in need of a home.
