PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The U.S. Department of Education is launching an investigation into Drexel University over alleged discrimination on campus.

Drexel is now among several schools being investigated by the department’s Office for Civil Rights for reports of antisemitic or Islamophobic activities on campus. Specific details of the investigation were not released.

Last month, the Department of Education announced investigations into the University of Pennsylvania, Lafayette College and five other schools across the country. The schools are being investigated for possible discrimination based on shared ancestry or ethnic characteristics, which violates the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey was also added to the list last week.

Drexel said in a statement it does not tolerate acts of bias, discrimination or harassment, and it said it will fully cooperate with the investigation.

This comes a week after former University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill stepped down following a controversial testimony on Capitol Hill regarding antisemitism on campus.

When asked if calling for the genocide of Jews constitutes bullying or harassment, Magill responded that it’s a “context-dependent decision.”
