PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man was killed in a violent crash in Northeast Philadelphia early Friday morning. The speeding driver slammed into a pole and a parked car with so much force that the engine flew out of the SUV.
It happened shortly before 1 a.m. on Frankford Avenue, near Pearson Avenue, in Torresdale. Police said the driver of a 2024 Kia Telluride was going south on Frankford Avenue “at a very high rate of speed” when he hit a metal pole and a car parked along the side of the street.
“It appears to be a large amount of force involved in this crash,” said Philadelphia Police Capt. Christopher Bradshaw.
The impact sent the SUV’s engine soaring into the middle of the street, and the driver was thrown to the back seat. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was hurt.
The driver’s side of the SUV was an unrecognizable, mangled pile of twisted steel.
Police do not know what happened leading up to the crash or why the driver was going so fast.
Neighbors who live along this stretch of Frankford Avenue said speeding is an ongoing issue.
