PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Rescue crews in Ocean City, New Jersey, are trying to locate a 20-year-old man who was swept away by a wave while boogie boarding Monday evening.
The U.S. Coast Guard said an alert of a missing swimmer came in around 5 p.m. after Ocean City Beach Rescue pulled one person out of the water near the 10th Street Beach. A second person remains missing.
The person who was rescued said a wave swept the 20-year-old man underwater without his boogie board, and he was not seen again.
Officials said the pair was boogie boarding about 200 yards from the shore.
Ocean City Beach Rescue is leading the search. The U.S. Coast Guard is assisting at the scene and in the air.
Officials warn that beachgoers are currently swimming at their own risk. Lifeguards are not staffed at Jersey Shore beaches until this weekend.
