PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site is launching a new after-hours series.

“Wednesday Nights” runs from May 7 through July 2, with a different theme each week that ties into the history and current state of the criminal justice system and how it applies to our daily lives.

The first night is intended to coincide with the primary election. There will be engagement opportunities with civic leaders, civic trivia and information on ways to get involved in the community. A beer garden will also be open.

Other theme nights include sports; a re-entry simulation night where you step into the shoes of a person being released from incarceration; and reflections on civil rights, mass incarceration and social justice.

“And I think what is really cool about Wednesday Nights is that you can come here with your friends, you can come here with your family, you can have this social experience that also brings you into really important critical conversations that our society needs to have more than ever,” said Lauren Zalut, senior director of learning and engagement at Eastern State.

Tickets are $17 online and $20 at the door. For more information, visit easternstate.org/wednesdaynights.
