PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 38-year-old basketball coach and her 70-year-old father, accused of assaulting an opposing team’s coach after a game, have been ordered to stand trial on the charges.
It happened on Feb. 1 after the Malvern Basketball League second-grade championship game at Holy Child School at Rosemont.
Prosecutor Bradley Deckel said Brittany Ortiz and her father, William Stanley, were verbally abusive during the game. Then, after it ended, things escalated in the hallway outside of the gym.
“They became verbally and physically assaultive, resulting in injuries to a woman and injuries to a 3-year-old child and a dad of that 3-year-old child being punched in the head,” Deckel said.
The dad of the 3-year-old and coach of the opposing team, William Radel, testified on Thursday.
He said when his wife, Tiffany Kalman, confronted Ortiz about yelling at him while he was holding their child, Ortiz grabbed Kalman by the hair, threw her down, and slammed her head on the floor. That’s when Radel stepped in.
He said he was struck from behind, with witnesses saying Stanley hit him in the head.
He said when Ortiz got up, she tried to knee him in the groin and kicked his daughter in the leg.
While all charges were held, Ortiz’s lawyer, Tim Woodward, argued the assault of a sports official was a stretch.
“If he's going to argue about the game outside of the gymnasium, in the lobby. He's not a sports official anymore, is he? He’s a regular citizen.”
Ortiz and Stanley are scheduled for a formal arraignment on June 3.
Charges against Ortiz and Stanley include simple assault and assault of a sports official.
