MARLTON, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — The principal of a Burlington County elementary school was arrested on Monday after she stole from her school, police say.

Officials at the Evesham Township School District notified police late last month when they discovered that about $700 in cash was missing from the main office at Helen Beeler Elementary School in Marlton.

According to police, an investigation led them on Monday to arrest and charge school principal Colleen Schroeder, 46, of Hainesport.

Schroeder is charged with one count of theft, a third-degree offense that comes with a maximum sentence of three to five years in prison. She was released from custody pending her first court appearance.

District Superintendent Justin Smith says Schroeder is currently on leave for an unrelated matter. “The district takes an accusation of theft seriously, and Ms. Schroder will remain on leave pending the adjudication of this matter,” Smith said in a statement. He did not provide additional details about the theft.
