SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Evesham Township Police are trying to crack down on mail thefts in the area.

Police say since June, they have been dealing with mail theft issues where suspects are hitting locations, like the Marlton Post Office on Main Street, targeting and washing checks, then fraudulently cashing them around the tri-state area.

Police have been investigating these thefts and recently, on Aug. 23, they witnessed people inside a Lincoln SUV pull up to the U.S. Postal Service mailbox on Main Street and steal mail from it.

When police began to approach them, the suspects fled the scene at a high speed. Police say they did not chase after them for safety reasons, as there were a lot of people in the area for the Joan of Arc Carnival.

They were able to locate and seize the SUV the next day in Pennsylvania but are still searching for the suspects.

Police say they are in the process of executing a search warrant on the car to “see if there's any evidentiary value that would help in this investigation.”

Police believe the suspects have access to a master key, allowing them to take mail from inside the drop box. They ask that anyone who placed mail in the drop box on Main Street between 5 and 10 p.m. on Aug. 23 contact them so they can include you in the investigation.

Since June, police have identified more than 30 check fraud victims, with a total monetary loss of over $160,000.
