PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia neighborhoods will soon see mobile voting drop-off ballot boxes. They are part of an initiative to help increase voting accessibility.

There are currently 14 voting drop boxes across Philadelphia, but the city commissioners recently voted to add more mobile ones.

Commissioner Omar Sabir said increased voting in the last election made it clear that people need more ways to get out and vote.

"Those satellite locations will not be open, unfortunately, due to funding," Sabir said. "We will have mobile locations where people can come."

Sabir explained that they want feedback from voters on where to put these secure mobile boxes. Those will be emptied daily and constantly under surveillance video.

"Elections are every six months," Sabir said.

"Throughout the year, my colleagues and I are constantly getting constituent feedback. We're going to be in the community, talking to the community, making voting accessible for everyone.

He added you can currently request a mail ballot to put in one of those boxes for the May 18th elections.

"We're doing everything we can to make it easier for people to vote and express their voice," Sabir said.
