PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Villanova University has named a Canadian cardinal the first recipient of the Pope Leo Sustainability Medal.
Michael Czerny will be recognized for advancing human dignity and social justice. Pope Leo — a Villanova alumnus — will bestow the award in October in Rome.
Villanova President Fr. Peter Donohue made the announcement Monday at the Vatican.
“We wanted to have the medal represent not only his being a part of us, but also what he has given to the world in so many other ways as well,” he said.
Donohue said Czerny’s work shows that care for the environment “cannot be separated from care for people.”
