PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — On the latest Flashpoint, we close out Black History Month with host Cherri Gregg asking the burning questions about how racism impacts children.
Katie D’Angelo and Dr. Valerie Harrison are the authors of "Do Right By Me: Raising Black Children in White Spaces." The authors became friends while working at Temple University over the course of two decades.
But their friendship deepened when Katie, who is white, adopted a biracial boy with her husband, who is also white. Valerie, who is Black, became "Aunt Va-Val," a friend and coach to the couple as they tried to navigate the world of race for the well-being of their son, Gabriel.
The two made many discoveries and share them in the book. They discuss transracial adoption and what white adults can do to help create a positive racial identity for Black children.

Our newsmaker of the week is Trey Brown. The 15-year-old is President and CEO of SPERGO, a fashion brand that he started at the age of 12. With the help of his mother, Brown grew the business from their home into a brick and mortar store and a stocked warehouse.
Recently, the Philadelphia 76ers announced that SPERGO will become of two "Buy Black Businesses" to receive an advertising and marketing boost from the team. Brown discusses how he grew the business from $178 in seed money to a national and soon to be global brand.

Finally, the Patriot Home Care Changemaker of the week is No More Secrets. Founder Lynette Medley discusses the organization's recent opening of the SPOT Period, the nation's first menstrual hub. The 2,500-square foot space will be a learning center focused on menstrual health and more.
Medley discusses the battle against period poverty and the many ways that the cause has found mainstream advocates in recent years. The group also delivers products and is raising money for a van.
