PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Last weekend’s floodwaters down the shore are raising fire risks days later.

On Thursday morning, firefighters battled a blaze at a home in Wildwood that may have started with a golf cart under a deck.

“It was possibly due to being damaged in this past weekend’s coastal flooding,” Wildwood Fire Department Deputy Chief Daniel Dunn said.

If your house was flooded, don’t assume electronics are safe, Dunn noted.

“You can have shorting out of the batteries, any electrical components of whatever the device may be, and it … can lead, unfortunately, to a significant fire,” he said.

The Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office said it has investigated about eight fires since the nor’easter. Floodwater coming into contact with electrical equipment may have contributed.

Two refrigerators and a freezer that had gotten wet caught fire Monday at Meredith Hyland’s cheese shop in Beach Haven.

Fire experts advise getting an electrician to check out wiring before you plug anything in or turn on flipped circuit breakers.
