Authorities said it started with an insurance claim of a stolen marine GPS unit from a marina in Cape May County. the group was stealing high-end marine GPS units from boats docked at marinas or at storage facilities in South Jersey and then bringing them down to Miami to sell for a profit.

Following a two-year investigation, police said more than 300 GPS units were stolen, worth about $300,000. Once they discovered items being stolen from parts of Cape May County, investigators said there were similar reports of robberies from North Carolina and Massachusetts.

The investigation linked all of these thefts to Mizael Alfonso, 47, Marie Frometa Rodriguez, 41, Manuel Barbosa Mendiluza, 58, and Ciro Perez Martinez, 29, all from Miami. According to authorities, they returned to Miami to sell the stolen items.
