PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Runners laced up and took over the Navy Yard in South Philadelphia Sunday morning for the 29th Annual Gift of Life Donor Dash, where they honored a special donor.

As the runners took off, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity Brothers shouted “Be Like Garrett", in honor of Garrett Nicholas, the 21-year-old West Chester University student killed after being hit by a car two weeks ago. His fraternity brothers said Garette was a kind and compassionate guy.

“We’re here for Garrett to support our fraternity brother”, said Matt.

“Running a 5K and 10k, said Dane.

“Really nice that we can make something good of this terrible situation,” said Mike.

Nicholas' organs were donated to the Gift of Life program. It saved three lives and will help heal up to 100 others through tissue donation.

Gift of Life president and CEO Richard (Rick) Hasz hopes others will also be inspired by the generosity.

“It’s really extraordinary, and all you have to do is go on to Donors1.org and check that box; it takes 30 seconds, and that 30 seconds can mean a lifetime for someone else,” said Hasz.

Lisa Connolly donated to her daughter and said it’s a wonderful feeling to save a life.

“It’s a miracle to watch them enjoy life as a second chance,” said Connolly.

The Donor Dash raised over $700,000 and counting.
