PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia police are investigating a chaotic series of fights inside and outside Edison High School in Hunting Park Thursday, leading to a student being stabbed as adults from outside the school had their own altercation.

School District of Philadelphia spokeswoman Monique Braxton said the series of events began with a fight involving several students on the second floor of the school during class hours. The school was placed on lockdown at about 12 p.m., lasting for about 25 minutes.

After the initial fight, one of the students allegedly called family members outside the school to come to the premises, said Braxton.

Two women who may have been connected to someone in the fight came to the school. They talked to school employees, and as they were leaving, they came across a grandmother and a granddaughter, according to officials.

Braxton said the women and the grandmother then got into their own altercation, with one of them bumping the other.

"Words were exchanged, the grandmother was maced, and she pulled out a knife, injuring another student who had nothing to do with the altercation here at the door or the altercation on the second floor,” said Braxton.

The student was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"Violence is never an acceptable way to resolve a conflict. Families showing up at school is not acceptable,” said Braxton. “The hope is that parents will model appropriate behavior for their children.”

Police are investigating and talking to the adults involved, and will be examining surveillance video of the incidents that the school is providing.
