PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 71-year-old Glenside man has been charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence after police say he struck and killed a woman who was walking her dog in Lower Moreland Township.

Around noon on Dec. 29, officers found 61-year-old Mary Duffy lying on the sidewalk of Philmont Avenue in Huntingdon Valley, close to the Philmont Country Club, from an apparent pedestrian-car crash. A car was stopped on the grass nearby.

Duffy underwent emergency surgery but died at the hospital later that evening. Her dog survived the crash.

The whole incident was captured on surveillance video from a neighboring business. Police say it shows Duffy walking her dog on the sidewalk when Michael Petrocik drove off of the road and struck Duffy, knocking her into a pole.

Petrocik continued driving after hitting Duffy, officials say. He hit a stone wall and became airborne before coming to a stop.

Investigators say he was driving nearly 50 mph in a 35-mph zone. The video shows no evidence of Petrocik hitting the brakes.

He had multiple controlled substances in his system, the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office said.

Petrocik was released on bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 15.
