PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Gov. Josh Shapiro was at a satellite voting office in Willow Grove Sunday to promote voting one day ahead of the registration deadline in Pennsylvania and carry out his civic duty.

At the office, Shapiro requested his mail-in ballot, filled it out and dropped it off all in one go. He said he will be in Harrisburg with his family for Passover and wanted to make sure he cast his ballot early.

“We want to have another free and fair, safe and secure election. People can vote however they want — on Election Day, they can vote from the privacy of their own home, they can come here to a satellite office, and it’s safe and secure. And that’s exactly what I did today,” he said.

Voter access has been a major emphasis of Shapiro’s administration. In September, he enacted automatic voter registration for Pennsylvanians who get their driver’s licenses. Other efforts mentioned by the governor included pre-canvassing and curing ballots.

“I want people to go out and vote. I want their voices to be heard. I want to make sure our democracy is strengthened through their participation,” Shapiro said.

That sentiment was echoed when Shapiro spoke at a get-out-to-vote event at Penn State Abington.

“I fundamentally believe that our democracy is strengthened when you all participate in it,” he said. “It is incumbent upon all of us to make sure that every legal, eligible voter has access to the ballot box, has the ability to find their power and their voice, and use it.”

Election Day is April 23. The last day to register is Monday, April 8, and the last day to request a mail-in ballot is April 16.
