PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A suspected gunman is in critical condition after a police-involved shooting in South Philadelphia Wednesday morning.

Police responded to the scene near 19th and Morris streets around 11 a.m. Aerial video from SkyForce10 showed a rifle lying in the middle of the street.

According to Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore, a man was walking around with a rifle, and police confronted him.

“Turned and there were officers that were commanding him to drop the rifle, at which time he turned toward the officers and one officer discharged a firearm,” he said.

“He was struck on the right side, from what I understand. He was immediately transported by police to the hospital. He’s in surgery. He is critical in critical condition.”

The suspect was the only one who was injured, officials said.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
