PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The high temperatures we’ve been experiencing don’t just impact people and pets, they also do a number on your car.

Shawn Davis, service manager of Bowe’s Exxon in Conshohocken, says a lot of people are coming in for overheating issues.

“... Thermostats, we have a radiator issue right now that we’re dealing with. We get a lot of AC compressor issues and things like that,” he said.

The hotter it is, the more the car has to work.

“Transmission, your engine, everything is trying to stay at a nice, happy consistent temperature," said lead technician Ian Stutzman.

He says people need to stay on top of things throughout the year.

“Maintain your vehicle. A big part of it — follow your manufacturer’s recommendation schedule for oil changes, and your coolant flushes,” he said.

And definitely get the battery checked.

A spokeswoman for AAA Mid-Atlantic says they haven’t seen a significant rise in emergency calls in our area yet, but a spike could happen in the coming weeks when more batteries are drained because of the heat. The agency recommends that drivers have emergency kits in their cars, including bottles of water, in case they get stuck somewhere.
