PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) affects 7 million people every year. The best way to describe the problem is that there is reduced blood flow to the heart, causing damage to it.

Although ACS can affect anyone, those at greatest risk are people who are over 65 and smokers. High blood pressure, diabetes and being overweight contribute. There is also an increased risk for those who have a family history.

Certain symptoms include chest pain and pain spreading to the arms or jaw. However, many people, especially women, do not get classic symptoms.

Many people are surprised that nausea, shortness of breath and shoulder pain are some of the other less common symptoms. Rapid treatment can prevent significant damage. Never hesitate to get help.
