PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A dead humpback whale washed up on an Atlantic City beach Friday morning in rough surf conditions.

Someone spotted it on the sand near Chelsea Avenue from a nearby high-rise building and called the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine.

"We got the Marine Mammal Stranding Center experts here, and they are doing their assessment here of the whale," said Atlantic City Fire Chief Scott Evans, who is also the city's emergency management coordinator.

"So it’s unfortunate. They think that it may have been in the water for a couple days before it washed up. But this is really a sad and unfortunate situation."

The cause of death has yet to be determined.
