UPDATE: 3:45 p.m.

The closure planned for Thursday, Sept. 8, has been canceled because of expected weather conditions.

The I-295 southbound ramp to Route 42 southbound and I-295 southbound will be closed starting 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, until 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10. It will close again at 10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, until 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, and again from 10 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, until 5 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14. The right lane on I-295 southbound will also be closed after Exit 28/Route 168.

The closures are necessary for the installation of inlets and drainage pipes. All motorists traveling on I-295 southbound will be directed to stay left onto Exit 26.

SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — The New Jersey Department of Transportation is closing a major exit ramp for two nights this week as part of the Direct Connection project in Bellmawr.

The exit ramp that links I-295 south to Route 42 will be closed for two nights — Thursday and Friday — so construction crews can install a new drainage system.

The closure will begin at 10 p.m. Thursday and remain through 5 a.m. Friday, then again from 10 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday.

Drivers will be detoured away from that tricky turn, known as Al-Jo’s curve, and forced to stay left on I-295 at the split onto I-76 westbound. From there, drivers can take Exit 2 on I-676 north and loop back around via Collings Avenue to get back onto I-676 south, which becomes I-76 east. Exit 1A takes drivers back onto I-295 south.

The detours could cause some delays and confusion, so it’s a good idea for drivers to familiarize themselves with the detour if they plan to travel that way during the closures.

The new drainage system is part of the larger Direct Connection project that will eventually eliminate the curve altogether.

Overall, the project is well behind schedule after a number of setbacks, including a massive wall collapse in March 2021.
