SOUDERTON, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — It has been an icy start to the day for much of Greater Philadelphia. Most neighborhoods were stuck just at or below freezing Friday morning.
Philadelphia, Delaware and South Jersey got heavy rain, but in colder neighborhoods just off to the northwest and in the Philadelphia suburbs and beyond, there was an icy coating on untreated and elevated surfaces and grassy areas.
Freezing rain led to a potentially dangerous morning commute, but driving was not too bad on the major roads.
All over the suburbs, a familiar sight was the the iced-over tree branches and icicles hanging from power lines. The world looked like it was made of glass.
The images are Instagram-worthy, for sure, but they are also a problem that officials had been worried about. In some spots throughout the region, the weight of the ice took down trees and power lines causing some roads to close down and people to lose power.
PECO reported 2,247 customers without power as of noon on Friday.
The wet weather should taper off by lunch time, said NBC 10's Bill Henley. Temperatures should top out around 50 degrees, but winds of about 30 mph will continue out of the northwest, bringing colder air back in for the night.
